Covid-19 Pandemic
Information on entry restrictions and
quarantine regulations in Germany
Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, there are travel restrictions for Germany when entering the country from many countries. There is also an obligation to enter quarantine for 10 days when entering Germany from many countries. Details can be found here.
Entry restrictions
As of November 8th 2020, travelers who have been in a risk area for the past 10 days must register at www.einreiseanmeldung.de before arriving in Germany and carry proof of registration with them upon entry.
If, in exceptional cases, it is not possible to make a digital entry notification, travelers must complete a substitute paper notification instead.
Travelers can find more information in a fact sheet and on the website of the German Federal Ministry of Health.
Germany is subject to travel restrictions when entering the country from many states. These are issued by the BMI. Before your trip, please also contact the BMI to find out which regulations apply in detail to the country from which you are entering Germany.
In principle, entry is possible from:
- EU member states
- Schengen-associated states: Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein
- the United Kingdom
- Further states, from which entry is made possible due to the epidemiological assessment of the situation by the EU.
Entry from other states is only possible in exceptional cases. The condition is that there is a compelling necessity.
Always remember about the following rules:
Wear a mask
Wash your hands
Holding distance of 2 meters
Quarantine regulations
In Germany, quarantine regulations are issued by the individual federal states. After consultation of the states and the federal government the cabinet took note of a new model regulation. On this basis, the states have issued their own corresponding regulations as of 08.11.2020.
Since the new model ordinance has significant changes, we ask you to read the quarantine/testing regulations in force in your destination federal state particularly carefully before entering the country; information on this can be found on the website of the state health ministries or senate administrations. For these new regulations, see below.
Quarantine regulation
According to the new model ordinance, the following principles apply:
Upon entry into Germany with prior stay in a risk area within the last 10 days.
- you must register via www.einreiseanmeldung.de before entering the country and carry proof of this with you,
- go to your destination immediately after entering Germany and
- isolate yourself there for 10 days (quarantine).
More information can be found on the federal Department of Health website.
A previous stay in a risk area is defined as a stay at any time within the last 10 days prior to entry.
The decisive factor is whether the area was designated as a risk area at the time of entry into Germany (i.e. not necessarily at the time of the stay).
Exception: transit
The obligation for domestic segregation does not apply to transit stays. In this case, however, you are obliged to leave Germany immediately. Regulations of the federal states are decisive.
The 10-day quarantine period can be terminated in accordance to the applicable state regulations at the earliest, after the fifth day after entry by a negative test result with regard to an infection with the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.
